The Virgin Mary appeared to Saint Juan Diego on the hill of Tepeyac near Mexico City between December 9 and December 12, 1531. Her image, now recognized as Our Lady of Guadalupe, appeared miraculously on the back of his cloak to prove to the local bishop that she wanted a church to be built at Tepeyac in her honor.
